Errors on Chinese export porcelain: Exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art , 2004

Indianapolis Museum of Art - Shirley M. Mueller Chinese Export Porcelain

2004 Chinese Export Curiosites Curated by Shirley M. Mueller with objects from her collection.

The mistake is that the directions for color are written in English in two different areas each (red and green).   But, instead of painting the designated red and green, the script was laboriously copied and the Chinese artisan painted the designated areas in the colors he imagined would be suitable.

Blue is represented in heraldic engravings by parallel lines.  This designation was sent to China on a drawing.  The lines were incorrectly copied by the Chinese worker though the color itself is correct.

English arms of Elwick, circa 1730

The error is that the crest (top of rim) is correctly orientated on the left and upside down on the right.  The plate with the error is the only one of its kind to my knowledge.

Dutch Chinese export underglaze blue and white saucer (left) and cup (right) decorated with the crucifixion of Christ, circa 1710.

The mistake is that the N of INRI is backwards on the cup.  It is correct on the saucer.
